How Anna University SGPA and CGPA work

Anna University runs on a 10-point credit system. Two numbers matter. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your credit-weighted average for a single semester. CGPA to percentage: the two formulas, and which one to use

This is where most students get confused — and where most online calculators quietly mislead you by showing only one number. There are two different conversions in circulation:

Worked example

Say one semester has three subjects: 4 credits at grade O (10), 3 credits at grade A (8), and 3 credits at grade A (8).

SGPA = (4×10 + 3×8 + 3×8) ÷ (4+3+3) = (40 + 24 + 24) ÷ 10 = 88 ÷ 10 = 8.8.

Converting that 8.8: by Anna University's official formula it's 88% (8.8 × 10); by the UGC formula it's 83% ((8.8 − 0.5) × 10). Same GPA, two valid percentages depending on who's asking.

SGPA vs CGPA — and how to lift your CGPA

SGPA is a snapshot of one semester; CGPA is your running average. Because both are credit-weighted, a weak semester only drags your CGPA down in proportion to its credits — so a strong final year, especially in high-credit project and core subjects, can still pull your overall CGPA up.
