How Anna University SGPA and CGPA work
Anna University uses a 10-point credit system. SGPA (Semester GPA) is the credit-weighted average of your grade points in one semester; CGPA is the weighted average across all semesters. The calculator above computes SGPA from each subject's credit and grade point, and shows the equivalent percentage.
The formulas
Grade points
| Grade | Marks | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| O (Outstanding) | 91-100 | 10 |
| A+ | 81-90 | 9 |
| A | 71-80 | 8 |
| B+ | 61-70 | 7 |
| B | 50-60 | 6 |
| U (Fail) | below 50 | 0 |
A worked example
Three subjects — 4 credits at grade point 9, 3 at 8, 3 at 8: SGPA = (4×9 + 3×8 + 3×8) / 10 = 84/10 = 8.4, which is 79% by the Anna University formula.
SGPA vs CGPA
SGPA reflects one semester; CGPA is your running average. A weak semester pulls CGPA down only in proportion to its credits, so a strong final year can still lift your overall CGPA. Keep an eye on high-credit subjects — they move your SGPA the most.
