Number to Words Converter (Indian)
- Indian grouping: ones → thousands → lakhs → crores.
- 1 lakh = 1,00,000 (5 zeros) = one hundred thousand.
- 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 (7 zeros) = ten million.
- 100 lakh = 1 crore; 100 crore = 1 arab.
- On cheques, write "Rupees … Only" to prevent tampering.
How the Indian numbering system works
The Indian system counts in lakhs and crores rather than millions and billions. After the first three digits (the hundreds), digits are grouped two at a time. That's why the commas fall differently:

Writing amounts on a cheque
When you fill a cheque, the amount goes in both figures and words, and the words end with "Only" — for example "Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand Only". The word "Only" and a line after it stop anyone from adding to the amount. Tick the "Rupees (cheque) format" box above and the converter writes it exactly this way. If there are paise, write them too — e.g. "Rupees Five Thousand and Fifty Paise Only."
Why lakh and crore, not million and billion?
Both systems are just different ways of grouping the same numbers. India, along with several South Asian countries, uses the lakh–crore convention in everyday life, banking, government and news, while the million–billion convention is the international standard. Knowing both helps when you read global figures: 1 million = 10 lakh and 1 billion = 100 crore. The converter shows both formats side by side so you can move between them instantly.
