How to convert CGPA to percentage
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a 10-point grade summary; a percentage is the equivalent out of 100. Most boards and universities use a simple multiplier to convert between them. The calculator above does it instantly — just change the multiplier to match your institution.
The CBSE formula
The CBSE officially uses 9.5 as the multiplier, derived from the average of the marks ranges of the five grades A1 to E. So a CGPA of 8.4 becomes 79.8%.
Other institutions differ
- CBSE: CGPA × 9.5
- Anna University: (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
- VTU, many engineering colleges: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- Some universities: CGPA × 10
Always use your own institution's official conversion — the multiplier is printed on most marksheets or the university website. Change the multiplier field above to match.
Why a multiplier is used
Grading scales hide the exact marks, so universities publish a standard factor to translate the grade average into a comparable percentage for jobs and higher studies. Using the wrong factor can over- or under-state your percentage by several points, which matters for eligibility cut-offs.
