JEE Main Percentile to Rank

Estimates your All India Rank from your NTA percentile.

Approximate All India Rank

JEE Main: marks, percentile and rank

JEE Main results are reported as an NTA percentile score, not raw marks or rank. A percentile tells you the share of candidates who scored at or below you, so it always runs from 0 to 100 and is normalised across multiple sessions. The calculator above estimates your All India Rank from your percentile and the number of candidates.

Percentile to rank

Estimated rank = ((100 − percentile) / 100) × total candidates

With about 12 lakh candidates, a 99.2 percentile gives an estimated rank near (0.8/100) × 12,00,000 = 9,600. This is an estimate — the official rank also uses tie-breaking rules.

Marks to percentile is NOT linear

Near the top, a few extra marks move the percentile a lot less than in the middle, because so many candidates are bunched together. This rough guide shows the pattern in a typical year:

Marks (out of 300)Approx. percentile
250+99.9+
200about 99.3
150about 97
100about 90
60about 75

These bands shift every session and year, so treat them as indicative only.

Why percentile, not marks?

JEE Main runs in multiple shifts with different papers. The percentile system normalises across shifts so no candidate is advantaged by an easier slot. The final merit for two attempts takes your best NTA score.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert percentile to rank?

Rank = ((100 − percentile)/100) × total candidates. It is an estimate.

Is marks-to-percentile linear?

No. Near the top a few marks change the percentile much less than in the middle.

What percentile is a good score?

99+ percentile is generally needed for top NITs; cut-offs vary by branch and category.

Which score counts for two attempts?

The better of your two NTA percentile scores.

Why is JEE Main reported in percentile?

To normalise across multiple exam shifts of differing difficulty.
