How the TNEA cutoff is calculated
Tamil Nadu does not use a separate entrance exam for engineering admission — your Class 12 board marks in the three core science subjects decide everything. The cutoff is a single number out of 200, built by adding your full Mathematics mark to half of your Physics mark and half of your Chemistry mark. That design is deliberate: engineering leans heavily on mathematics, so Maths is given double the weight of either science. Two students with the same total board percentage can end up with different cutoffs depending on how their marks are distributed across the three subjects — the one stronger in Maths comes out ahead.
A worked example
Take a student with Mathematics 95, Physics 92 and Chemistry 88. The cutoff is 95 (full Maths) + 46 (half of 92) + 44 (half of 88) = 185 out of 200. Now compare a second student with Maths 88, Physics 95, Chemistry 92 — the same three numbers, rearranged. Their cutoff is 88 + 47.5 + 46 = 181.5. Identical raw marks, but the first student ranks higher purely because their strongest subject was the one that counts most. This is why, if you are still writing your board exams, every extra mark in Maths is worth two in Physics or Chemistry for TNEA.
From cutoff to rank to a seat
Your cutoff feeds into the state merit rank list, released this year on 1 July 2026, on which about 2.36 lakh candidates appear. A higher cutoff means a lower (better) rank number, and your rank decides when you are called for choice filling and how strong your position is when seats are allotted. But the cutoff alone does not tell you which college you will get — that depends on the closing cutoff of each college and branch, which is only published after each allotment round at cutoff.tneaonline.org. The practical way to use your cutoff is to compare it against last year closing cutoffs for the colleges you want: if your score comfortably clears a branch closing cutoff from last year, that seat is realistic this year too.

Category and community — the same cutoff, different competition
The cutoff formula is identical for everyone — there is no bonus or deduction by community. What differs is the rank list you compete on: you appear on the general merit list and, if applicable, on your community list (BC, BCM, MBC/DNC, SC, SCA, ST). A seat can reach you either through the general queue or through your community quota, whichever comes first. If you studied Class 6 to 12 in a Tamil Nadu government school, you also get a third route — the 7.5% government school quota, a separate pool with its own, usually lower, cutoff range and full fee waivers. Knowing which routes apply to you is as important as the cutoff itself.

The cutoff on this page is computed from the marks you enter, but at certificate verification the counselling authority checks the same marks against your original HSC marksheet, so enter them honestly. You will also need supporting certificates depending on the quotas you claim — a community certificate for community reservation, a nativity certificate to prove Tamil Nadu residence, an income certificate where an income limit applies, and a first graduate certificate if you are the first graduate in your family (which brings its own fee concession). Keeping these ready as digitally signed e-certificates before your counselling call saves a scramble later.
