What choice filling actually is
Choice filling is where TNEA is really decided. You are not applying to one college — you are building a ranked wish-list of college-and-branch combinations, and the seat-allotment algorithm walks down your list and gives you the first one your rank is good enough to secure. That single rule has a powerful consequence: the order you choose matters more than how many you choose. If you put a college you would never actually join above one you truly want, and your rank reaches the first, you will be allotted the wrong seat — and you will have only yourself to blame. So the guiding principle is simple: list strictly in the order you genuinely prefer, most-wanted first.

How to fill choices — step by step
2. Open the choice filling section once your rank-band window is live.
3. Add college + branch combinations to your list.
4. Reorder them into true preference — drag your most-wanted to the top.
5. Save frequently; review the full list end to end.
6. Lock the choices only when the order is final.
How to order your list — the strategy that works
Split your list mentally into three zones. At the top, put your dream seats — the colleges and branches you would be thrilled to get even if your rank makes them a long shot; there is no penalty for aiming high, because the engine simply skips those it cannot give you. In the middle, put your realistic targets — combinations where your cutoff comfortably clears last year closing cutoffs. At the bottom, put your safety net — seats you are confident of getting and would still accept. This way, whatever your rank reaches, the seat you are given is always the best one you were willing to take. Do not order by college brand alone. A strong branch at a slightly lesser-known college often beats a weak branch at a famous one — for your career and for placements. Decide honestly whether college name or branch matters more to you, and let that shape the order. And never leave your list short: students who add only a handful of top colleges and then miss all of them go unallotted and have to wait for a later round with fewer seats left.
After allotment — accept, or move up
When the tentative allotment is published, you will see the seat the engine has given you. You then choose what to do with it. You can accept and confirm the seat, pay the fee and download the allotment order — ending your counselling there. Or, if you are happy to hold this seat but hope for something better, you can accept it provisionally with upward movement, which keeps you in the running for a higher choice in later rounds while guaranteeing you at least the current seat. Read the exact options on the portal carefully each round, because the labels (self / floating / upward) decide whether you keep, risk, or improve your seat.
Documents to keep ready before you lock
Choice filling itself needs no upload, but the moment you are allotted a seat you move to certificate verification, and a missing document can cost you the seat. Have your HSC marksheet, transfer certificate, and — depending on the quotas you claim — a community certificate, nativity certificate, income certificate and first graduate certificate ready as digitally signed e-certificates. If you studied Class 6 to 12 in a government school, keep your government-school study certificate ready for the 7.5% quota. Preparing these during the choice-filling window, not after allotment, is what separates a smooth admission from a lost seat.
