What is an income certificate and why you need it
An income certificate is an official document issued by the Revenue Department stating your family's annual income. In Tamil Nadu it's needed for a long list of things — college fee concessions and scholarships, reserved seats, welfare schemes, pensions, and government job applications. Because so many benefits depend on it, it's worth having a current one ready.
Documents you need
| Purpose | Accepted documents (any one, unless noted) |
|---|---|
| Address proof | Ration card, Aadhaar, driving licence, passport or voter ID |
| Identity proof | Aadhaar or any government photo ID |
| Income proof | Salary certificate, or income tax return acknowledgement |
| Declaration | Self-declaration of income (in the prescribed format) |
How to apply online — step by step
- Go to tnesevai.tn.gov.in and log in with your CAN. No CAN yet? Register once with your mobile and email — you'll reuse it for every e-Sevai service.
- Click Services → Department Wise → Revenue Department.
- Select REV-102 Income Certificate.
- Fill in your details, upload the documents above as clear scans, and add the self-declaration.
- Pay the small service fee online and submit. Save the application number.
- A VAO / Revenue Inspector verifies your details, and the digitally signed certificate is issued — usually in 7–15 days.
Prefer offline? Take the same documents to any e-Sevai / CSC centre and the operator files it for you.
How to check status and download
Log back into the e-Sevai portal, open Track Application Status, and enter your application number. Once approved you can download the certificate (digitally signed PDF) directly — no need to visit the office again.
Validity and common mistakes
- Validity is 6 months — apply close to when you actually need it, so it isn't expired at submission.
- Mismatched names/addresses across documents cause rejection — keep them consistent.
- Blurry uploads slow verification — scan clearly.
- The fee is nominal; avoid agents charging hundreds of rupees.
