What a community certificate is for
A community certificate officially records the community you belong to — such as SC, ST, MBC, BC or BC(M). In Tamil Nadu it's essential for claiming reservation benefits: reserved seats in college admissions, government job quotas, scholarships and many welfare schemes. Because it's permanent, one certificate serves you for life — no renewals.
Documents you need
- Address proof (ration card, Aadhaar, voter ID or similar)
- Identity proof (Aadhaar or any government photo ID)
- Ration card
- Community proof — usually a parent's/blood relative's community certificate, or school records (TC) showing community
- Passport-size photograph
How to apply online — step by step
- Go to tnesevai.tn.gov.in and log in with your CAN (register once if needed).
- Open Services → Department Wise → Revenue Department.
- Select REV-101 Community Certificate.
- Fill your details and upload the documents in the required format and size.
- Pay the fee online and submit; save the application/transaction number.
- After VAO verification the digitally signed certificate is issued — download it.
You can also apply at any e-Sevai / CSC centre with the same documents.
Checking status and common mistakes
Use Check Status on the portal with your transaction/application number. Watch out for: community proof mismatch (the community must match your parent's record), inconsistent names/addresses across documents, and blurry uploads. The certificate being permanent means it's worth getting the details exactly right the first time.
