Updated for 2026 · For Tamil Nadu residents tracking a TNPDS smart ration card application.
- Check at tnpds.gov.in → smart card application status.
- You need the reference number from your acknowledgement.
- Pick the right type: new, reprint or correction.
- Returned/rejected? Use Resubmit Application, don't start over.
- Helpline 1967 / 1800-425-5901.
What you need
Your reference number — printed on the acknowledgement you got when you applied (online, at a ration shop, or at an e-Sevai centre). Without it, you cannot track the application, so keep it somewhere safe. Note which type of application it was — new card, reprint, or correction — because the status page asks you to choose. A good habit the moment you apply: photograph the acknowledgement, so the reference number and application type are saved on your phone even if the paper slip is lost.
How to check — step by step
2. Go to smart card application status.
3. Select new / reprint / correction.
4. Enter your reference number and Submit.
What each stage means
| Stage | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Submitted | Application received | Wait for verification |
| Under verification | The taluk supply office is checking your details and documents | Normal; allow time |
| Approved / Card issued | Your smart ration card is granted | Collect / download as directed |
| Returned / Rejected | A problem was found; a reason is recorded | Correct and resubmit |
How long it takes
Timelines vary by taluk and how clean your documents are. A straightforward new-card application clears in a few weeks; anything needing extra verification — or caught in a duplicate check — takes longer. If your application sits at the same stage for weeks with no movement, that's the signal to follow up on the helpline 1967 or at the taluk supply office, which can see the file directly.
Two numbers worth saving
Keep the helpline 1967 and the toll-free 1800-425-5901 saved before you need them. They can trace an application, explain an unclear status, and confirm what a returned application needs — often faster than a trip to the taluk office, and without losing a working day. Call during office hours and quote your reference number.
If the status is returned or rejected
Don't panic and don't start a fresh application. TNPDS lets you Resubmit a returned application under Smart Card Application Services — fix the flagged item and send the same application back. The full walk-through, including the common duplicate problem (being on another family's card) and Aadhaar name-matching, is in our guide to a rejected ration card.
If you've lost your reference number
Without the reference number, self-service tracking isn't possible. Go to the ration shop or e-Sevai centre where you applied, or call the helpline 1967 with your Aadhaar and details — they can usually trace the application from their end.
Checking the card itself, not just the application
Once your status shows approved / card issued, there's a second thing worth checking: that the member list and card category on the issued card are correct. TNPDS cards come in categories (rice card, no-commodity card, sugar card, and so on), and the members and category printed on the card decide what your family can actually draw at the ration shop. A card can be "issued" successfully but still carry a wrong category or a missing member — which then needs a separate correction application. So don't stop at "approved"; confirm the card shows every family member and the category you expected. If it doesn't, file a correction (and track that under the correction type, not "new"). Catching this at issue time is far quicker than discovering it months later at the shop counter.
Pick the right application type — it changes the status page
TNPDS asks you to choose the application type before it shows status, and choosing the wrong one returns "no record found" even when your application exists. The three types:
| Type | Use it when you applied for… |
|---|---|
| New | A brand-new smart ration card |
| Reprint | A duplicate of a card you already hold (lost/damaged) |
| Correction | A change to name, address, members or card category |
If your reference number returns nothing, the first thing to try is a different type — people often apply for a correction but check under "new", and conclude wrongly that the application vanished. Match the type to what you actually applied for, and the record appears. This one detail saves a lot of unnecessary panic and helpline calls.
