For TNEA 2026 (Anna University counselling). Informational guide — always follow the official schedule and instructions at tneaonline.org.
- Rank comes from your cutoff /200; ties broken by Maths → Physics → Chemistry → DOB → random number.
- Steps: register → verify certificates → rank → choice filling → allotment → confirm.
- Choice order matters — put your true first preference on top.
- Multiple rounds; you can accept-and-confirm or opt to upgrade.
- Compare with last year's closing cutoffs to fill choices smartly.
From cutoff to rank
Everything starts with your cutoff — computed from your +2 marks as Maths + Physics/2 + Chemistry/2, out of 200. (Not sure of yours? Use our TNEA cutoff calculator.) All candidates are ordered by cutoff to form the rank list. When two people share the same cutoff, the tie is broken in this order: higher Maths marks, then Physics, then Chemistry, then older date of birth, and finally a random number.
The counselling steps
- Register & pay on tneaonline.org and upload your certificates.
- Certificate verification (online / at a facilitation centre).
- Rank published based on cutoff and tie-break rules.
- Choice filling in your allotted time slot — list college-and-branch options in preference order and lock them.
- Seat allotment round by round; you accept and confirm, then report to the allotted college.
How choice filling actually decides your seat
The system goes down the rank list and, for each candidate, gives the highest-preference choice still available. So your order of choices is everything: put the college+branch you genuinely want first, even if it feels ambitious, and list realistic options below it. If your dream seat is gone by your rank, you get your next available preference — never a lower one you ranked above it.
Rounds, upgrade and confirmation
TNEA runs in multiple rounds. After an allotment you usually choose between options such as accept-and-confirm (lock this seat) or accept-and-upgrade (keep this seat but try for a better preference next round). Read each round's option meanings carefully on the portal — picking the wrong option can cost you a seat.
Planning your choices
- Pull the previous year's closing cutoffs for your target colleges and branches, and compare with your cutoff.
- Group choices into ambitious → realistic → safe and list many options — don't fill just two or three.
- Decide branch vs college priority in advance (e.g., CSE anywhere vs top college any branch).
