TNEB Domestic Bill Calculator
Bi-monthly units, telescopic slabs (TNERC Tariff Order 2024).
How the TNEB domestic bill is calculated
TANGEDCO (TNEB) bills domestic consumers bi-monthly using a telescopic slab system — each slab rate applies only to the units inside that slab, not to the whole consumption. There is also a two-tier free-supply subsidy. The calculator above estimates the energy charge from your bi-monthly units.
The slab structure (bi-monthly)
| Consumption | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Up to 500 units | 0-100 free; 101-200 at ₹2.35; 201-400 at ₹4.70; 401-500 at ₹6.30 |
| Above 500 units | 0-100 free; 101-400 at ₹4.70; 401-500 at ₹6.30; 501-600 at ₹8.40; 601-800 at ₹9.45; 801-1000 at ₹10.50; above 1000 at ₹11.55 |
The 500-unit cliff
The biggest jump is at 500 units. A household at or below 500 units gets a bigger free quota and lower slab rates; cross 500 and you move to the higher-rate structure with only 100 free units, and unlock the steep ₹8.40–₹11.55 slabs. Staying just under 500 bi-monthly can noticeably cut your bill.
A worked example
450 units (under 500): 100 free; 100 units at ₹2.35 = ₹235; 200 units at ₹4.70 = ₹940; 50 units at ₹6.30 = ₹315 — energy charge about ₹1,490, before fixed charges and taxes.
What else is on the bill
Your actual bill also has a small fixed charge based on connected load, plus any subsidy adjustment and electricity tax. Those are applied by TANGEDCO and not part of this energy-charge estimate, so always confirm the final figure on the official portal.
Frequently asked questions
Is TNEB billed monthly or bi-monthly?
Domestic supply is billed bi-monthly (every two months).
What does telescopic billing mean?
Each slab rate applies only to the units within that slab, not the whole consumption.
How many units are free?
Up to 500 units gets a larger free quota; above 500, only 100 units are free.
Why does crossing 500 units cost more?
You move to the higher-rate structure with a smaller free quota and steeper upper slabs.
Does this include fixed charges and tax?
No, it estimates energy charges only; TANGEDCO adds fixed charges, subsidy and tax separately.
