How the TNEB domestic bill is calculated
TANGEDCO (TNEB) bills domestic consumers bi-monthly using a telescopic slab system, with a free-unit subsidy first. The key rule that catches people out is the two-tier free quota: if your bi-monthly use is up to 500 units you get 200 units free; if you cross 500 units, your free quota drops to only 100 units and the higher slab rates apply to the rest. This is why a household sitting just above 500 units can pay sharply more — it loses 100 free units and moves into higher slabs. Staying within 500 bi-monthly is the single biggest saving.

A worked example
450 units bi-monthly: you are under 500, so 200 units are free; 201–400 (200 units) at ₹4.70 = ₹940; 401–450 (50 units) at ₹6.30 = ₹315; energy charge about ₹1,255, before fixed charges and tax.
700 units bi-monthly: now over 500, so only 100 units free; 101–400 at ₹4.70 = ₹1,410; 401–500 at ₹6.30 = ₹630; 501–600 at ₹8.40 = ₹840; 601–700 at ₹9.45 = ₹945; energy charge about ₹3,825.
What else is on the bill
Your actual bill also includes a small fixed charge based on connected load (about ₹100 bi-monthly for single phase) and electricity tax. These are added separately by TANGEDCO and are not part of the energy charge this tool estimates.
