What a UP caste certificate is for
A caste certificate officially records that you belong to a Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) or Other Backward Class (OBC). In Uttar Pradesh it's essential to claim reservation — reserved seats in college admissions, state government job quotas, scholarships and many welfare schemes. Because it's permanent, one certificate serves for life, so it's worth getting the details exactly right.
Documents you need
| Purpose | Accepted documents |
|---|---|
| Identity proof | Aadhaar or government photo ID |
| Address proof | Aadhaar, ration card, electricity bill, voter ID |
| Caste proof | Father's/blood relative's caste certificate; old school or land records showing caste |
The caste proof is the key document — the caste on your certificate must match a family record, so a parent's caste certificate is the smoothest evidence. Keep every upload PDF/JPEG and under 100KB.
How to apply on e-District (E-Sathi) — step by step
- Go to edistrict.up.gov.in and click Citizen Login (E-Sathi).
- Register as a new user (name, DOB, address, mobile, email) and create a login.
- Log in and select the Caste Certificate (Jaati Praman Patra) service.
- Fill the form and upload ID, address and caste proof.
- Pay the ₹30 fee and submit; save the application number.
- After the Lekhpal/Tehsil verification, the certificate is issued — usually in 15–30 days.
You can also apply at a Jan Seva Kendra (CSC) with the same documents.
Permanent validity — but note the central OBC exception
A UP caste certificate never expires, which is a real convenience. However, there's one important exception for OBC candidates: for central government jobs and central colleges, a state caste certificate isn't enough — you also need an OBC non-creamy-layer certificate that reflects your current income status and is valid for one financial year. See our OBC non-creamy-layer guide for how that differs.
How to check status and download
On edistrict.up.gov.in, open Application Status, enter your application number, and track it. Once approved, download the digitally signed certificate directly, and use the portal's verification option to confirm authenticity when an institution asks.
Common mistakes
- Caste proof mismatch — the caste must match your family record; this is the top reason for rejection.
- Name/address inconsistencies across documents.
- Oversized uploads — keep files under 100KB, PDF/JPEG.
- Using a state certificate for central reservation — you need OBC-NCL for that.
SC/ST vs OBC — what the certificate covers
A UP caste certificate can certify any of the reserved categories, but the evidence and downstream use differ slightly:
| Category | Notes |
|---|---|
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | Reservation in state jobs, admissions, schemes |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | Similar reservation benefits |
| Other Backward Class (OBC) | State reservation; central jobs need a separate OBC non-creamy-layer certificate |
The certificate itself states your category based on the UP state list. Confirm your caste is on the correct state list, because the same community can appear differently across states.
Correcting a caste certificate
If your issued certificate has a spelling error, wrong category, or a mismatch with your other records, apply for a correction at the Tehsil/e-District with supporting proof (your family's caste record and ID). Fix it before you use the certificate for an admission or job application — a mismatch between the caste certificate and your Aadhaar or school records is a common reason applications get held up. Because the certificate is permanent, it's worth getting every detail right the first time so you never have to revisit it.
