What the FMB actually shows
An FMB sheet is a scaled drawing prepared by the survey department. It shows the outline of the survey field, the internal subdivision lines, the measurements along each boundary, and how the field sits against neighbouring fields. Where a survey number has been split among heirs or buyers, the FMB shows the resulting subdivisions and their shapes.

How to obtain the sketch

Reading it alongside the other records
The three land records answer three different questions, and buyers get into trouble when they check only one. The patta answers who holds this land. The A-register gives the fuller revenue detail — classification, extent and the history of the entry. The FMB answers which land, and what shape. And the encumbrance certificate answers what has been registered against it.
Before any land purchase, particularly agricultural or unbuilt land, look at all four. A property can have a clean EC and a valid patta and still be the wrong shape, short of the advertised extent, or partly occupied by a neighbour's compound wall — and only the FMB and a physical measurement will show you that.
What it costs and how long it takes
Where the FMB is available online, viewing or downloading it is inexpensive and usually immediate. A certified copy from the taluk office carries a modest fee and typically takes a few days depending on the office and how the records are held.
A field measurement by a government surveyor is a different matter. It involves an application, a fee, and a visit scheduled according to the surveyor's workload, so allow several weeks rather than days, and longer in busy taluks. That is worth knowing in advance if you are buying against a deadline: if a boundary needs to be officially fixed before you complete, start the application early rather than discovering the timeline after you have paid an advance.
